Trees are a critical part of our world and having an impact on each of us.
The current warming trend is significant and serious, which is likely caused by human activity, massive release of greenhouse gases, including carbon dioxide (CO2). These gases have heat-trapping nature and causing global temperature rise, shrinking ice sheets, rising sea level and causing extreme events[1]. In addition, just Bitcoin mining is producing enormous amount of CO2 every year and has a carbon footprint similar to New Zealand[2]. When we continue using these platforms then the least we can do, is plant some trees. On average, one mature tree can absorb nearly 22 kg of CO2 per year[3] helping to combat our emissions. However, we need to plant many trees. More than a dozen trees are required to even offset CO2 from using one car.
The frequency of floods have been increasing since the beginning of this millennium[4]. Trees are important in capturing rainwater and decreasing the risk of floods. For example, raindrops falling on leaves can evaporate before reaching to ground and roots will absorb some that falls on ground, both help to slower the rate of water flowing to rivers.
Trees are major part of our biodiversity. Insects, fungi, mammals and other plants are dependent on trees and the higher number of these species creates wider biodiversity. This is important to our lives as our agricultural systems relies on the biodiversity. Additionally, it is beneficial for our mental and physical health to be in green spaces.
Trees are cleaning the air around us. They are absorbing pollutants we are creating (e.g. nitrogen- and carbon oxides) and rewarding us with clean oxygen. Moreover, trees improve water quality as they filter out impurities from there. Finally, they can also reduce noise and visual pollution (e.g. noise coming from highways and hiding buildings).
Trees are being planted for you through minting a NFT
Go to our page at opensea.io or rarible.com.
Choose one or several trees you like among the ones we are currently offering and place your order.
The tree's NFT will be minted for you and ownership recorded in the blockchain.
Congratulations! You got the tree and you can claim its ownership on our site that gives you the option to add your name and display picture next to the tree's information where you can also see the tree's photos and geographic location.
Please find answers for the most common questions below
A non-fungible token (NFT) is a unit of data on a digital ledger called a blockchain, where each NFT can represent a unique digital item, and thus they are not interchangeable. NFTs can represent digital files such as art, audio, videos, items in video games and other forms of creative work. In our case, NFT represents a real world object - a tree.
At the moment our work is at opensea.io and rarible.com which means only Ethereum can be used to buy NFTs. However, Ethereum still uses Proof of Work which has a big carbon footprint on our planet and therefore we are on our way implementing it on Cardano blockchain as soon as it starts supporting the technology.
We are photographing every single tree we are planting and providing GPS coordinates. We are attaching a QR code on each tree to verify this is the one. Also, feel free to go on site to confirm the presence of your tree!
Unfortunately we cannot give you the land nor create a legally binding contract for the tree at this moment. However, the tree will be yours as long as you own the NFT and you are free to go to into our forest, enjoy a peaceful time close to your trees and even pick mushrooms across the whole NFT trees area.
Newly planted trees can be fragile and might get destroyed by wild animals or storms. Don't worry, we've got you covered! A new tree will be planted into the same location (if possible) or nearby and issued for you.
When you buy a tree and get your NFT then you can clam this tree's ownership on our site. We identify you through MetaMask and afterwards you will have the option to set your display name as well as your avatar which will be shown on your tree's page. We also calculate the number of trees each verified user owns and rank them based on that (displayed under the avatar).
